ARNOLD WESKER The kitchen This play was first presented in 1959 at the Royal Court Theatre with a shortened version. The complete version was in the same place in 1961.

The development from the leisurely start to the day with its desultory chat and gossip, builds into a brilliantly choreographed sequence, some off it actually set to music, as the workers toil ever more frenetically and the proprietor stands on a table as if conducting an orchestra. The rush is followed by a peaceful interlude in the afternoon, when we finally learn more about some of the characters before the evening trade picks up and the pressure kicks in all over again, during which one of the characters, spectacularly cracks up. Suddenly, this often comic play shades into something close to tragedy as Wesker contemplates the cost of making people function as little more than cogs in a machine. The play isn’t perfect.

The dramatist bangs home his point about the dehumanising effects of hard labour a little too stridently, and it is frustrating that we learn so little about most of the characters. But the production, superbly designed by Giles Cadle with a brilliantly realised kitchen complete with boiling pans, burning gas jets and roaring ovens, and with its precision drilled choreography of the workers’ tasks in the kitchen, grips throughout. The huge acting ensemble is outstanding, bringing both truth and detail to their sketchily drawn characters, and by the end of the play, Wesker’s kitchen has come to resemble a vision of hell on Earth.
